SOCIAL SECURITY - SÉCURITE SOCIALE

Have you received a job offer and now need to provide your employer with your social security number?
If you do not yet have a social security number, you can provide your identification number in the meantime.
When applying for Social Security registration, remember to provide these two documents:

• An identity or residence document that allows you to be identified

• A civil status *document to confirm your identity, such as a full copy of your birth certificate. 

*This civil status document must be accompanied by a French translation, unless it comes from a country in the European Economic Area or Switzerland, or an international agreement exempts you from this requirement.

DECLARATION OF A DEPARTURE FROM THE COUNTRY

We often forget the basics. For example, filing a declaration of departure from the country before moving to France is a necessary requirement for various administrative procedures in French territories. You must inform the foreign tax office that you depend on of your intention to move to France.

ENTERING FRANCE WITH A PET

If you plan to bring a cat or dog from abroad, the animal must have a microchip or tattoo and be vaccinated against rabies. Depending on the country of origin, it may be subject to other health measures. Some breeds are not allowed or require specific documentation. Be aware and check some of the requirements so that your ‘furry friend’ can travel with you.
Animal originating from a non-EU country

• Be at least 15 weeks old

• Be identified by an electronic chip or tattoo (if the tattoo was done before 3 July 2011 and remains clearly legible).

• Be vaccinated against rabies.

• Have undergone a rabies antibody titration test at least 30 days after receiving the rabies vaccination and at least three months before their arrival in France.

• Have undergone any health measures to prevent diseases or infections other than rabies.  You can find out what measures are required  at the French embassy or consulate in your country of departure.

• Any dog brought into France must have at least one permanent tooth.

• All breeds of cats (purebred or mixed breed) are accepted.

• You may bring a total of up to 5 animals (dogs and/or cats).

Animal originating from an EU country

• Be at least 15 weeks old

• Be identified by the implantation of an electronic chip or tattooed (if the tattoo was done before 3 July 2011 and remains clearly legible).

• Be vaccinated against rabies. To be valid, the rabies vaccination must have been administered for the first time when the animal was at least 12 weeks old and after its identification. The vaccination is only valid for 3 weeks after the first injection. Boosters must then be given according to the frequency specified for the vaccine used.

• Have undergone any health measures to prevent diseases or infections other than rabies.  You can find out what measures are required  at the French embassy or consulate in your country of departure.

• Be accompanied by a valid European pet passport..

​Don't forget to register your pet with the National Identification File for Dogs, Cats and Ferrets(ICAD)   within 7 days of arrival in France

DRIVING LICENCE - INTERNATIONAL PERMIT, EXCHANGE FOR A FRENCH DRIVING LICENCE, ADDING A CATEGORY

Do you have a driving licence issued by a country outside the EU and would you like to exchange it for a French one? Or would you like to add a category or register a driving licence obtained in an EU country for professional reasons?
You will need to provide some important documents, such as:

• If your licence includes heavy categories (lorries, buses, etc.), you will need to provide either a medical certificate confirming your fitness to drive heavy vehicles or a declaration renouncing these categories.

• A driving rights certificate less than six months old, issued by the foreign authorities that issued the driving licence.

REGISTERING A FOREIGN VEHICLE

SCHOOLING - FROM CHILDCARE TO UNIVERSITY

Childcare for children aged 0 to 3 can be provided in various ways, such as public or private nurseries, childminders or nannies. Depending on your family's financial situation, you may be eligible for government subsidies or assistance.
In France, children must be enrolled in the school system from the age of three and attend school until at least the age of sixteen. If you choose public education, you must register at the town hall and then at the school.
If your child is preparing for or already has a bachelor's degree, they may be admitted to a higher education institution (technical or university).
If the diploma was obtained from an educational institution outside of France, it must first be recognised by means of a ‘comparability’ certificate.

INCOME TAX RETURN

Are you a resident of France who needs to declare their income for the year? From 2025 onwards, online filing will be mandatory for those with an internet connection.
Please note that if you live abroad but receive income from France, you must declare it in France, even if the amounts are small or you have received no income at all.
